It is IMPORTANT to contact (email or telephone) Ohio Senators Goodman, Hughes, and Miller to support the House passed version of HB 318. Their contact information is available near the bottom of this post. I have also included a sample email text to the senators that you can just copy and paste into your email (see below in yellow).

If the Ohio Senate fails to take action by the end of the year to address the $851 million state budget short fall our schools will face a loss of $2.3 billion in state and federal aid. For Franklin County school districts (see list below) failure by our state lawmakers means a 13% funding cut. HB 318 as passed by the Ohio House and supported by Governor Strickland would freeze income tax rates at 2008 levels to address the state’s budget shortfall. This plan provides the most stable funding source for filling the budget shortfall for K-12 education and is supported by many educational groups, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and other business groups.

Senator Contact Message:

I'm asking you to support the House-passed version of House Bill 318. The freeze of income tax rates at 2008 levels is the best option for fixing the budget shortfall. This plan provides the most stable funding source for filling the budget shortfall for K-12 education.

At stake is a total of $2.3 billion in state and federal aid for our schools. This equates to roughly a 13 percent reduction for our school district in current funding. This will force our district to reduce learning opportunities for students and lead to further elimination of education employees.

I urge you to seek quick passage of the House-passed version of House Bill 318, so that Ohio can continue to improve educational opportunities for our children and maintain critical support for primary and secondary education.

A compromised version has been passed. Thank goodness!Perhaps they can seriously work on fixing the budget shortfalls for the time being although an improved economy would help so very much. I could not believe Jim Hughes' comment on Monday's news when he was standing against 318 because it was a "bandaid." I emailed him to say that sometimes a bandaid is needed until things get fixed.

So true, BeepDawg - a bandaid is what we put on a wound so that it has a chance to heal.

Of course, we really, really need a permanent fix to school funding and we all know that, but, to continue the medical analogy, if we don't keep the patient alive on dialysis until a kidney is found, where will that leave us?
