This is the most recent update on Danny. It was written by his mother and is not the news we were all hoping for. I know I posted this request before, but now, more than ever, it is worth repeating. Go to carepages.com and register yourself. The carepage name is "Potokar". His mom reads these daily and so does Dan. I think it would be great for the hundreds of people who are on this site, friend or stranger, to do this for this young man. PLEASE take five minutes and give him some words of encouragement and support during this very scary time.
FROM THE CAREPAGE
Put your armor on and let's get ready for battle. We have received the news today, that the chemotherapy treatments were not successful. Danny's counts are continually rising and we are now preparing to find out what must be done to try something else. Dan has a catscan scheduled for Monday, March 3rd - the results of that scan are going to be sent to Indiana University, where a team of doctors there specialize in testicular cancer. We have been told to expect to be headed there in order to start consulting with them regarding a procedure dealing with (stem cell bone marrow chemotherapy). I do not know enough about this yet to try and explain it to all of you, as I am trying to do as much research as possible myself. We will meet with Danny's present oncologist on Wednesday, March 5th to discuss the results of the scan, and get his opinion on where to go from here. Needless to say, this was not what we were expecting as everything up until the last treatment seemed to be moving along successfully. Just a bump in the road! Dan knows what he has to do. Please pray for his strength in all areas of his life. He believes wholeheartedly that victory will reign, it's just going to be a little longer fight. I will update again as soon as we know somthing. Thank you, Dan's mom |

this is the lastest update:
March 03, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST Hello Dan's Friends and Family,
I just got off the phone with Nannette and per her request after a grueling day, she asked me to post an update. The day started early with blood work and the much awaited CAT scan. On the way home, she was called and told to get Danny back to the doctors, because it seemed as if there was a mistake in the blood count results. Danny went back for more blood work, and unfortunately, the initial results were not a mistake. Danny's hemoglobin count was critically low. He had to go immediately to Mt Carmel East for a blood transfusion, and will return again tomorrow morning for 2 more pints of blood.
Once they finished there, Nannette, Ed, and Danny headed up to the James Cancer Center and met with a specialist to get another opinion on Danny's illness and treatment. The doctors at the James were in agreement with Dan's doctors and stated that the next step needs to be treatment and care from the experts at Indiana University. The doctors at the James will be on board with the doctors from IU and are committed to helping Danny beat this illness.
Danny's appointment for the IU consultation is March 20. So, he will take the results from the CAT scan, expected to be back this Wednesday, and hopefully a strong mental attitude, to IU in a few weeks. What they know of this treatment thus far, is that it is likely that Dan will be admitted to IU for 30 days of extensive high dosages of chemo. From there, it looks like it will be at least one year of treatments and monitoring; some of that can be handled out of the James, others will require trips back and forth to Indiana. I'm sure Nan will provide more concrete details about Dan's treatment at IU after the consultation.
Danny is obviously pretty wiped out, and the family is trying to wrap their minds around the information.
So, I am sure I speak for all of us when I say, NOOOOO!!! This is not the news we wanted to hear!
I am encouraged as I read through the postings how many of you are praying for Danny and his family and I know the family is humbled by your outpouring of support. I am thinking that it might be really helpful to see what resources we can line up to help get Danny through this next extended battle he is facing.
It would really benefit Danny if we could combine our strengths and our gifts to perhaps take on the following:
1. Organize, maintain, and participate in a cross-country on-going prayer chain. 2. Create and participate in fundraisers to help offset the travel expenses, and other unforeseen cost that are soon going to be haunting Dan's family. Many of you have already suggested to me that it is probably time to start some fundraising activities. I am not really sure how to go about doing this, but I am willing to learn. And I am willing to get advice or action from anybody else who is willing to help. 3. Create a local volunteer list of people who can contribute their talents, such as preparing meals, house chores, car maintenance issues, helping with the girl's errands, etc. 4. Create and manage a bank account of financial donations, that would be used to directly help fight this battle. 5. ETC.
If this is something you would like to be part of, or if you have any suggestios, please email me at suzthomas12@yahoo.com. I am Nannette's cousin, and have been helping her, along side of her family as best I can. I love this family so much, and really want to do whatever I can, along with your help, to ease some of this pain and suffering.
Take care everyone, and keep on praying that Danny is able to battle this mess and will soon enough be back filling our lives once again with that gorgeous smile and infectious laugh!
We love you Danny!!!!

March 24, 2008 at 12:21 PM EDT Hi All,
Once again on behalf of Dan's family, thank you for your support and encouragement. It is much needed and appreciated!
Dan and his family had the consultation at Indiana University on Thursday. Much to our dismay, he will indeed need the treatment at IU as they have learned that his type of cancer is highly resistant to chemo. He does in fact have numerous lesions in his lungs and the best and only option is for Dan to proceed with this treatment.
Dan will be heading to IU on Sunday evening, his 21st birthday. Not a great way to spend a birthday! He will be in Indiana pretty much full time for the next 7 weeks or so. He will be staying on campus, rather than at the hospital; he will be admitted to the hospital if necessary. The procedure is quite involved; it will occur in two complete cycles. So once he completes cycle 1, he will get about an 8 day break, then return to IU to repeat the process.
My explanation is simply an attempt at conveying to you all what I know...bottom line is, Dan is seriously in for an intense battle; the last procedure pales in comparison to what lies ahead. Emotionally, Dan is holding strong. I am sure he is scared and frustrated, but he is digging deep to embrace that strength that makes him the Dan that we know and love.
Many of you have graciously offered your support in various ways. Because Dan is a OSU football player, he and his entire family are linked to the rules and regulations of the NCAA. I had to ask you all to hold off a bit in order for Ohio State Football to receive the proper information and documentation from the NCAA compliance office. We now have the go-ahead from the NCAA; By the way, OSU Football has been amazing! Puts a whole new meaning on the slogan "Go Bucks!"
The NCAA is allowing us to open an account in Dan's name that will be managed by Ohio State. [No other account is allowed based on NCAA rules.] It will be managed by Amy Burgess, Supervisor of Internal Relations, OSU Athletic Office, and all distributions for expenses for Danny's treatment will be handled by Amy. Thank you Amy!!! So, if anyone wants to contribute, you may send a check to:
Amy Burgess Ohio State Football, WHAC 53 Irving Schottenstein Dr Columbus, Ohio 43210
Please write Dan Potokar on the check so that the money is allocated properly. Please note that this is not a foundation so it is not considered a charitable contribution on your taxes.
For people who have contacted me to conduct fund raising, meals, and other service needs, I have a NCAA form we need to fill out prior to starting these activities. The form is simple and I can help you with it. All monies raised on Dan's behalf have to be deposited into the OSU account noted above. The good news is: you don't need a form to pray :). Just pray!!!
Thank you again for all of your help and for your concern. It is so needed. I will be in touch with all of you who have written to me thus far to get things moving.
Take care, and please know how grateful we are for each and every card, email, posting, contribution, and prayer!
Do not hesisitate to call me or email me with any questions or concerns. My cell is 513-265-4573; my email is suzthomas12@yahoo.com.
Thank you,
Suzanne Thomas

BOWL-A-THON FOR DANNY POTOKAR April 26, 2008 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. Grove City Lanes 3940 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio 43123
Dan Potokar, a 21-year old Ohio State University football player and Grove City High School Alumni was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer on December 3, 2007 following an illness that would not retreat. His initial treatment, conducted in Columbus, consisted of surgery and chemotherapy. Since this treatment did not remove the cancer that had spread to his lungs, he and his parents have temporarily relocated to Indiana University where Dan is currently undergoing stem cell/chemotherapy treatments. This procedure to treat Dan’s cancer is extremely risky. The emotional and financial impact this procedure will have on the entire Potokar family can not be emphasized enough.
To help the Potokar family with financial expenses, a Bowl-A-Thon is scheduled for Saturday, April 26th from 12 noon until 4 P.M. •The number of games you bowl will depend on how many bowlers are willing to participate. •We will contact you prior to the Bowl-A-Thon to let you know how many games you will be bowling and what time you will be bowling. •Please contact either Terri Ehmann or Danielle Ratcliffe before April 16th if you plan to bowl (see contact information below). If you have a team of 5 bowlers, please provide the name of each bowler when you contact us so we can place all bowlers on the same team.
To participate in the Bowl-A-Thon, we are asking each bowler to obtain pledges from friends, family members, co-workers, etc. prior to the event. •People can pledge a flat amount (i.e. $5.00, $10.00, $25.00, etc.) OR •People may pledge so much per pin (i.e., if you bowl a 150 and someone pledges 5 cents per pin, they would owe you $7.50; if you bowl a 130 and someone pledges 10 cents per pin, they would owe you $13.00). If you bowl more than one game and someone pledges an amount per pin, your highest bowling score will be used to determine the pledge. •Although not mandatory, we are asking each bowler to try to obtain pledges totaling over $100.00. •Please complete the attached pledge sheet and bring it with you to the Bowl-A-Thon. Our hope is that all pledge money is turned in the day of the Bowl-A-Thon, or no later than May 3rd.
In addition to the Bowl-A-Thon, we will be selling food and having a 50/50 raffle. Door prizes will be given away during the Bowl-A-Thon. As Dan is an OSU football player, all funds must be handled by OSU to comply with NCAA regulations; If paying by check, the check must be payable to The Ohio State University (write “Dan Potokar” in the memo line of the check).
Please contact Terri Ehmann or Danielle Ratcliffe by May 3rd to turn in your money. Terri Ehmann 614/871-7977 (home) 614/216-7977 (cell) kehmann@columbus.rr.com
Danielle Ratcliffe 614/599-9839 dratclif@capital.edu
WHEN ATTENDING THIS EVENT, DO NOT PARK BEHIND GROVE CITY LANES OR YOU WILL BE TOWED. PARKING IS AVAILABLE ACROSS THE STREET BEHIND BROADWAY DESIGN GROUP AND THE OLD FARMERS MARKET, AS WELL AS THE BACK PARKING SPACES BEHIND SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME.
Even if you decide not to bowl it would be a great opportunity for you to drop off a donation.

April 18, 2008 at 08:21 PM EDT Hello again… I apologize for not providing you all a quicker update regarding Dan’s condition, but I want to provide you with accurate information, and honestly it changes every day. So, here is what is going on, as of today, April 18, 2008. Dan has been at Indiana University since March 30. He went through a 5 day stem cell extraction process, followed by 3 days of high dose chemotherapy. He had a few days of “rest”, and then he had the stem cells transferred back into his system. Currently he is in the monitoring phase of Cycle 1. Dan handled this cycle remarkably well. Just a few days ago he had to be admitted into the hospital due to side effects. None of these side effects were unexpected by the IU staff. Nevertheless, it was tough to watch. Throughout this cycle, Dan’s demeanor has been quiet; actually he sleeps most of the time. As of today, Danny is beginning to gain his strength back. We still do not know how this treatment has affected the cancer; I will let you all know as soon as I hear. If all continues to go well, he will begin Cycle 2 in a couple of weeks. As far as the family goes, Ed and Nannette have been at IU full time and Steph is there as often as her schedule allows. Ed and Nannette have both been steadfast in caring for their son and Danny lights up every time he sees Stephanie.OSU made arrangements for Dan and his parents to have rooms at an extended stay hotel chain adjacent to the cancer center. The accommodations are wonderful and the IU cancer facility is outstanding. Ed has turned into quite the chef-which has helped with Danny not losing a lot of weight during this cycle. Rest assure that Dan is getting very good care!! The outpouring of support for Danny has been overwhelming and is very much appreciated. Both Nannette’s employer, Franklin County Courthouse, and Ed’s company, Liebert Corp, have been beyond understanding. Ed and Nannette are both humbled by the support of their companies. Please know that the cards that have been sent have helped with morale and the contributions you have made are helping with current and future expenses incurred by this illness. More importantly, the countless prayers from all of you have sustained Danny as this procedure has been grueling. Thank you so much for supporting and remembering him! Below is information for mailing cards or for sending a contribution. Please remember that all monetary contributions have to be sent to OSU. Note there is no address provided for prayers…you guys know what to do, and please please please keep them up…they do make a difference!!! TO SUPPORT WITH A CARD OR NOTE, please send to: Carl or Nancy Kinman c/o Dan Potokar 2091 Mayflower Circle Grove City, Ohio 43123
For a contribution to Danny’s fund, CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE OUT TO: The Ohio State University, in memo section write: Danny Potokar Fund Mail to: Amy Burgess Ohio State Football, WHAC 53 Irving Schottenstein Dr Columbus, Ohio 43210
There are a few fundraisers coming up if you wish to attend. It is unlikely that Danny will attend the events, but know that he will be there in spirit! • A Bowl-a-thon at Grove City Lanes Saturday, April 26, from 12-4. • A pizza and drink gathering at Planks in Grove City from 2-7 on Sunday, April 27. • A golf outing in Indianapolis, led by the OSU Alumni Association-Indianapolis Chapter May 8: info is on website www.indybuckeyes.com. • A BW3 restaurant grand opening in Whitehall in early May. If you would like further information regarding these fundraisers, or would like to spearhead a fundraiser for Danny, please contact me. Thank you all for your love for Danny and his family; you all have been steadfast in your care and concern for them. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or questions: My cell is 513-265-4573; my email is suzthomas12@yahoo.com. Thank you!

The latest update from the CarePages site: Dear Friends,
Finally an update with good news!!!
Dan will be released from the IU hospital and heading back to Columbus tomorrow, April 23!! His tumor markers are down significantly and his white cell count is climbing steadily.
We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief, and a prayer of thanks, as it appears that as of today, the procedure is working.
Dan will return to IU in about 7 days for Cycle 2. While he is at home, he needs to concentrate on rebuilding his strength, both physically and mentally. His parents, Nannette and Ed, also need to regroup, as this has been particularly difficult on them as well.
The first of the fundraisers are occurring this weekend; members of Dan’s family will be at the events, but it is unlikely that Danny will be there. I know he wants to be there to see and thank all of you, but he is still extremely weak. I know you all understand…

Good morning~
I just wanted to let the Potokar family know that Danny is going to be offered as the celebrant in prayer at our Friday morning mass at Bishop Watterson. I was fortunate enough to get to coach Danny as a Freshman in football and then to coach AGAINST him in Track when he was a Senior and can't begin to say what a great young man he is as we all know. I know that the DAWG community has rallied behind Danny and I don't mean to be nosing in from another school, but prayers, even from the "competition" never can hurt~ We at Watterson will keep Danny in our prayers as well.
God bless and stay strong! |

19 May 01, 2008 at 08:43 AM EDT Hi All,
What a week it has been! First of all, thank you for the amazing show of support for the fundraisers...WOW!!! It warms our hearts to know how much Danny is loved and cared for by all of you. Danny was not able to make it to the events as he was recuperating from Cycle 1, but he is sincerely humbled by the outpouring of love from family, friends, coaches, teammates, and complete strangers-who I like to refer to as our new friends.
Danny returned to IU on Monday evening, April 28, and began the stem cell extraction process the following morning. This time, they were able to extract a lot more stem cells-which I think means we are off to a great start!
This morning, Danny starts the first of three days of high dose chemo. So, please put those prayers into overtime, as we need for this chemo to zap any remaining cancer cells, once and for all!
It is probable that Danny will be admitted to the hospital a bit sooner during Cycle 2 than in Cycle 1, as he obviously isn’t as strong beginning this phase. Remember, this is okay, as this allows for him to be constantly monitored and hydrated as needed.
Ed and Nannette both sound positive and encouraged by Danny’s progress thus far. They are both acutely aware that Dan is on the home stretch and that this procedure has to work. I feel very confident that their hope will prevail!
You all have been steadfast in your prayers for Danny and our family and please know that your prayers have made a significance impact thus far. Again, thank you for your love and care; you all sustain us!
I promise to keep you posted on any significant changes; please do not hesitate to contact me anytime if you want or need clarification of information.
Take care,

this is a poem that was written for Ryan Salmons, a friend of mine whose son is fighting cancer. I thought it was a great one worth sharing. It touched me and made me think of all that has been done for Danny and his family.
Family and friends have joined their hands and their hearts
We have formed a circle of strength that will not come apart
When times are dark and some things go wrong
Remember our prayers to help you stay strong.
Let our tremendous love for you become a guiding light
Let us show you the path as you as you continue your fight
We will be beside you for support every step of the way
We will join voices to cheer for you on your victory day. |

Today's update, May 17.
Hi Again...and hopefully for the LAST time :)
Danny had his CAT scan…. the doctor stated “this is exactly what we expected to see.” They are very optimistic!!
Now, there appears to be a small blood clot in the groin area. Whether this is a result of the original tumor is unknown. The clot will be managed by a blood thinner shot once Dan’s platelet counts increase.
The abs are clear!!
And the lungs- well….still not pretty, but the doctors think it is scar tissue based on the tumor markers being so low.
Danny’s tumor markers were over 250,000 in December. Now they are 7.8!!! Can anyone calculate that percent of decrease?? (Can you tell I write math books for a living??)
The following is the Game Plan that Danny will be on for awhile: - He will return to Indy in one month for additional testing. - On a monthly basis, for one year, Danny will have his tumor markers checked. - The Big Celebration Day for the Indy doctors will be in one year given that the markers remain nil. - For two years after that, Danny will have his tumor markers checked every 3-4 months. - For two years after that, Danny will have his tumor markers checked every 6 months. - At the 5 year mark, he is considered to be in remission.
Danny’s first goal is to gain his strength back so he can play in the Grove City Alumni Softball Tournament at the end of July. What do the Dawgs think about that??
After losing two quarters at OSU, he plans to resume his educational pursuits in the Fall. How ready is OSU for him to return??
Ed, Nannette, and Danny are anxious to return home, which will likely occur tomorrow or Monday. Let’s welcome them home with open arms!
It has been quite a journey my friends … And God willing the worse is behind us! Thank you again for your heartfelt love and support!
HE MADE IT!!! THANK YOU GOD!!!!
Hugs and Smooches to you all!
